Strong tornadoes swept across parts of Kansas, a city in the US state of Missouri, and the US state of Colorado on Sunday, damaging dozens of homes and buildings and leaving residents without power.
In Kansas, a tornado tore through the small town of Grinnell, with fewer than 300 residents. According to NWKS Radio, the tornado ripped the roof off a church and destroyed several other buildings.
A portion of Interstate 70 was shut down due to power failure, Lisa Mussman of the Kansas Department of Transportation was quoted as saying by the New York Times.
In Colorado, several tornadoes were reported in areas near Denver. One tornado touched down at least three times near the town of Bennett, damaging 17 buildings — including six homes — according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's office.
In Elbert County, southeast of Denver, 19 homes were damaged and many residents were left without electricity, said Kara Gerczynski, the public information officer for Elizabeth Fire Rescue.
Videos on social media showed funnel clouds moving through neighborhoods in Colorado, destroying homes and scattering debris everywhere.
According to the National Weather Service , more tornadoes were also reported near the Kansas towns of Haviland and Greensburg. Officials are still checking the extent of damage in those areas. Some parts of Kansas stayed under tornado warnings Sunday night.
As per the reports of the Storm Prediction Centre , the severe weather is expected to continue till Monday. Forecasters warned of more tornadoes, strong winds and severe hailstorms across the central Plains and into Missouri.
The threat will shift eastward on Tuesday, putting the Midwest, Tennessee Valley, and Ohio Valley at risk.
