SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police Wednesday held a high-level meeting to review security arrangements for the upcoming alumni meet of the University of Kashmir . It will be attended by Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, two Supreme Court judges, and Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju.
IGP Kashmir, V K Birdi chaired the meeting at the police control room. As per a police statement, Birdi has directed to intensify surveillance around key venues and put in place an effective traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement of guests and the general public.
Supreme Court justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, J&K LG Manoj Sinha, and chief minister Omar Abdullah will also attend the meet, to be held on July 27.
University registrar Naseer Iqbal told TOI that response to the invitation is overwhelming. “Since this is the university’s first event of its kind since its establishment in 1948, alumni all across have shown interest,” he said. “Hundreds have registered. Though some may be dropped out due to logistical constraints this time, the university plans to hold such events in the future as well to accommodate all,” he added.
=Originally established as the University of Jammu and Kashmir in 1948, the institution was bifurcated into two in 1969 — University of Kashmir in Srinagar and University of Jammu in Jammu. The University of Kashmir is located in Hazratbal, Srinagar, with its campus spread across 247 acres between the Dal Lake to the east and Nigeen Lake to the west. The campus is divided into two main sections — Hazratbal campus and Naseem Bagh campus.
