NEW DELHI: The internal rift within the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) deepened on Thursday as party MLC K Kavitha alleged that efforts were made to merge the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led outfit with the BJP . She also claimed that the proposal was brought to her while she was in prison earlier in case related to Delhi liquor policy.
In an apparent swipe at her brother and BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR), Kavitha said she was approached with a merger proposal during her incarceration in Delhi last year in connection with the Delhi liquor policy money laundering case, a proposal she said she rejected outright, news agency PTI reported.
"There are attempts to hand over the BRS to the BJP, instead of fighting the party that’s trying to loot Telangana’s resources,” she told reporters during an informal interaction. “When I was in jail, the same proposal came to me. I firmly said no. BRS is like Sriram Raksha for the people of Telangana,” she said.
There was no immediate response from the party on Kavitha’s claims.
Kavitha also expressed disappointment over the silence of party leaders, excluding KCR, when she was being targeted on social media and in sections of the vernacular press. She questioned why no one came to her defence.
Her remarks come amid ongoing tensions within the party, which were further fuelled by the leak of a letter she had written to her father and party president KCR. She had earlier alleged that conspiracies were afoot within the BRS and described KCR as "a God surrounded by devils."
"BRS carries the spirit of Telangana. It is the reason the state exists. It should never be merged with a national party,” she said, adding that she had communicated these concerns directly to KCR.
Kavitha also questioned the lack of public support or protests after a judicial commission, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice PC Ghose, summoned the former chief minister in connection with the Kaleshwaram project.
In another indirect dig at KTR, currently touring the US and UK, she asked, “What are you celebrating in the United States? Why is nothing happening on the ground here?”
Responding last week to her criticism and the leaked letter, Rama Rao had said internal party matters should be resolved within the organisation and not aired publicly.
Kavitha also revealed that she had offered to resign from her MLC post following her arrest, but her father declined the offer.
She further alleged that some BRS leaders played a role in her defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Nizamabad constituency.
