NFL eyes historic digital first as Chiefs vs Chargers Brazil Opener nears YouTube TV streaming breakthrough

The National Football League (NFL) is reportedly in the final stages of securing a deal with YouTube TV to exclusively stream its 2025 season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers . The match is scheduled to be held in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Arena Corinthians (Neo Química Arena).

The match would mark the first time an NFL regular-season fixture is streamed live solely on YouTube TV. The Chargers will be the designated home team. It will also be the first official international appearance for Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by three-time Super Bowl MVP Mahomes, star tight end Kelce, and head coach Andy Reid, have seen a notable surge in popularity. Kelce’s relationship with 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift has attracted broader attention to the team, drawing interest from audiences beyond traditional NFL viewership. Chiefs games consistently lead in ratings, and their Christmas Day win over the Pittsburgh Steelers streamed on Netflix set a new NFL streaming record with an average of 24.3 million viewers in the U.S.

If the YouTube TV deal is finalized, it would strengthen the platform’s position in live sports streaming and reflect the NFL’s growing emphasis on digital media. The move follows a successful 2024 experiment with Peacock, which streamed a playoff game that drew approximately 14.7 million viewers.

Brazil is a key international market for the league, with an estimated 36 million NFL fans. The NFL’s 2024 matchup in São Paulo between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers reportedly brought in about $60 million to the local economy. Encouraged by this success, the league is set to build on its international footprint.

In addition to the Brazil game, the 2025 season will feature matches in Berlin, Dublin, Madrid, and London part of the NFL’s ongoing effort to globalize American football and engage younger, digitally focused fans.

The league is expected to release its full 2025 schedule in mid-May, including finalized broadcast details and kickoff timings for the season opener.
