Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty were a hit pair in the 90s. They did many movies together from ‘Mohra’ to ‘Waqt Hamara Hai’. While the audience loved this two-hero pairing, there was a time when Anil Kapoor had allegedly dismissed them as ‘50% waale heroes’ thus stating that they cannot carry a film alone as solo lead on their shoulders. Thus, they are cast together. In a recent interview, Suniel was asked if this is true and if it was then how he reacted to it.

Shetty opened up on those days in an interview with Radio Nasha and said, “Yes, there was this type of dialogue—I saw it in the newspaper too.” He added, “Lekin voh star the toh bol sakte the. He meant that a single hero should have been taken instead of two actors.”

However, Suniel still thinks of it with a lot of grace adding that they were still new as actors and carving a space for themselves in the industry.

Suniel further said, “Toh bura toh lagta hi hai. But we also knew we hadn’t become stars at his level. Still, we believed something would happen for us eventually.”

‘Mohra’ was a huge hit eventually and Suniel-Akshay were a hit pair for film-makers to cast. They continued to star together in many other films many years later also. For instance, they did ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Awara Pagal Deewana’ and also will be starring together in ‘Hera Pheri 3’. Fans still wait to see them together.

In the same interview, Suniel also spoke about shooting with Divya Bharti for ‘Mohra’. She was initially cast for the film but Raveena Tandon replaced her after she passed away. Talking about her, Suniel recalled, “That girl was absolutely fearless. She was full of life and masti.” He said she was a treat to work with.
