Zelensky accused of 'losing his mind' as he claims NATO nation flew drones into Ukraine

Hungary claimed Volodymyr Zelensky is "losing his mind" after he accused reconnaissance drones from the country of violating Ukraine's airspace. The Ukrainian President said initial assessments suggested the drones could have been checking over the "industrial potential" of Ukraine's western border areas.

Mr Zelensky's comments prompted fury in Budapest, with Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto saying on X: "President Zelensky is losing his mind to his anti-Hungarian obsession. He's now starting to see things that aren't there." It's the latest spat between the NATO nation and Ukraine, with Hungary continuing to block the country's accession to the European Union. After a military briefing on Friday, Mr Zelensky said: "The commander in chief reported on recent drone incidents along the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.

"Ukrainian forces recorded violations of our airspace by reconnaissance drones, which are likely Hungarian.

"Preliminary assessments suggest they may have been conducting reconnaissance on the industrial potential of Ukraine's border areas.

"I instructed that all available information be verified and that urgent reports be made on each recorded incident."

Last month, Budapest imposed a travel ban on the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces after attacks on a Russian oil pipeline halted supplies to Hungary.

On Friday, Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha announced Kyiv had responded by imposing an entry ban on "three high-ranking Hungarian military officials".

"Our mirror response to Hungary's earlier baseless entry ban for our military officials," he said.

"Hungary's every act of disrespect will be met with adequate response, especially disrespect for our military."

Mr Szijjarto claimed Ukraine has "carried out an anti-Hungarian policy" for a decade.

It came as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said his country will continue to source fossil fuels from Russia despite demands from his ally Donald Trump.

He said he told the US President that dropping Russian energy would be a "disaster" for Hungary's economy.

Hungary remains one of the only countries in Europe to continue purchasing Russian oil and natural gas following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Mr Trump, an admirer of the Hungarian PM, recently called on all NATO nations, including Hungary, to stop buying Russian oil as he attempts to end the war in Ukraine.
