Furious Birmingham locals have blasted their Labour-run council for tearing down St George's and Union Jack flags from streets. In a viral TikTok one frustrated local questioned: "When are we going to stop seeing the English and British flag as a problem?"

Birmingham Council, which declared itself broke in September 2023, claimed those attaching flags "could be putting their lives and those of motorists and pedestrians at risk" despite being up to 25ft off the ground. In the video AdventureOfTheSwan, who byline says he is "Standing up for the future of the GB spreading facts + using common sense", called the move by Birmingham Council "a load of nonsense". He added that he "felt very proud" when he saw English and British "flags being put up all over Birmingham".

He said: "Imagine being from a country where putting your own country's flag up could cause harm to other people. It's all a load of nonsense

"I have to say when I saw these flags being put up all over Birmingham it made me feel very proud.

"It's almost stating that Birmingham is an English city yet the council, the Government have deemed it to be putting lives at risk. Our Saint George's Cross, our Union Jack, our heritage, our home, our past and our future

"When are we going to stop seeing the English and British flag as a problem? It's our identity and we should never ever be ashamed of that.

"We should be proud and no matter what they teach you and no matter what they teach you these days you should be very very proud to be British."

The TikTok which has amassed 40k views received an outpouring of support from fellow frustrated Brits.

Critics pointed out that Palestinian flags have flown elsewhere on the streets of the city, where 29.9% of residents are Muslim, since the war in Gaza began in 2023.

One questioned: "Yet in certain areas of Birmingham the Palestinian flag is flying and has been for quite a while. How come that flag is allowed?"

Another added: "My flags only come down when I change them for new ones, no one will make me remove them."

Birmingham city Council has declared war on the English people. It's up to the English people of Birmingham to fly the St George's Cross and the union flag throughout the city. Do not surrender to the enemies of Britain", said a third.

"Any council that doesn't fly the British flags obviously isn't run by those who put the country and its peopke first", said a fourth.

Despite being cash strapped the council has sparked furthe fury after revealing plans to illuminate its local library in orange, green and white to mark India's independence just hours after it showed the same courtesy to Pakistan.

In a social media post, which has removed the ability for users to leave a comment, Birmingham City Council wrote: "Tonight we will be lighting the Library of Birmingham orange, green and white to mark the eve of 79th anniversary of India's independence day which is celebrated on August 15."
