A tropical escape is probably near the top of most wishlists this summer, finding a hidden gem to relax for a week or two surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
The main stumbling block for most hoping for this is the luxury price tag that comes with it, but that doesn't have to be the case.
While trips to the Maldives or Seychelles set you back many thousands of pounds, turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and luxury overwater villas can be found for a fraction of the price elsewhere.
The Philippines is well-known for its breathtaking natural beauty and unique landscapes, but one of its lesser-frequented destinations includes a place described as the "Maldives of the Philippines".
Budget-conscious travellers and adventure seekers alike have discovered this beauty spot for far less than it would have cost to go on an Indian Ocean escape.
Palawan is the largest island in the province of the same name, located in the western Philippines and is recommended as the best budget replacement for a Maldives trip according to travel experts at Experience Travel Group.
"Palawan has a unique combination of natural beauty, adventure, and affordability. Travellers can enjoy many of the same experiences they would in the Maldives, such as pristine beaches and turquoise waters, but at a fraction of the cost," A spokesperson for the group explained.
"It's becoming increasingly popular among travellers who want a tropical paradise experience without overspending."
With powdery white beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, dramatic limestone cliffs and vibrant coral reefs, this holiday spot provides an authentic and accessible tropical experience with island hopping, kayaking and plenty of exploring on the itinerary.
Beachfront resorts and guesthouses have drawn plenty of comparisons to the Maldives, yet offer breathtaking views and a tropical experience without the high cost.
"Palawan may not have the overwater villas of the Maldives, but its natural beauty, clear waters, and abundant activities make it a comparable destination for travellers seeking a tropical paradise at lower costs."
The perhaps surprisingly affordable accommodation on Palawan offers beachfront stays from £25 to £70 per night, depending on the season, while mid-range resorts may cost £80-£150 per night, which is still considerably cheaper than the Maldives, where similar accommodations can set you back £400 per night.
Boutique guesthouses and hostels are available for even less, making it a popular option for solo travellers and backpackers.
Dining is equally budget-friendly with an array of fresh seafood and local delicacies, including grilled fish, coconut desserts, and tropical fruits, available for just a few pounds per meal.
UK travellers reaching Palawan typically catch a connecting flight. Most will fly from London Heathrow or other major UK airports to Manila, before taking a domestic flight of around two hours to Puerto Princesa, or one hour to El Nido Airport.
Experience Travel Group recommends visiting during the country's dry season (March to October) for the best weather and calmer seas. Multi-day tours are also a must for the full island-hopping experience.
The group also contends that visitors rent a motorbike or bicycle to explore hidden spots and quiet beaches.
