One of UK's 'most haunted' roads where motorists have seen 'girl in white'

Across the length and breadth of the UK, there are roads that could make even the most seasoned driver think twice about a late-night drive. Ghostly apparitions appearing out of thin air, phantom vehicles, and inexplicable accidents have been reported by motorists for years, earning some stretches of road a reputation for being notoriously haunted.

From quiet country lanes to bustling motorways, these spectral sightings have become woven into local folklore. Ovoko has put together a list of the UK's most haunted roads where driving at night can be as eerie as it is unsettling.

UK roads said to be 'the most haunted' 1. A75, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

Known as Scotland's most haunted road, the A75 meanders through Dumfries and Galloway and has a history of strange sightings. Motorists have reported phantom lorries appearing from nowhere, ghostly pedestrians stepping onto the road, and spectral animals darting across the tarmac.

One spine-chilling tale involves two lorry drivers who crashed into what they believed was an oncoming lorry, only to find nothing but an empty road when they came to. The A75 has been a hotspot for supernatural encounters for centuries, making night-time driving here a chilling experience, even for the bravest.

2. Platt Lane, Lancashire

The shadow of the Pretoria pit disaster in 1910 still seems to hang over Platt Lane. Drivers tell tales of seeing glowing eyes peering out from the roadside hedges and ghostly miners hauling carts as if trapped in a never-ending shift.

Motorists who have travelled this route during the night hours report an overwhelming sense of dread, as though invisible labourers are marching beside their vehicles. The tales of ghostly pit workers are so compelling that certain residents refuse to venture along this section once darkness falls.

3. Oldnall Road, West Midlands

The Oldnall Road is a straight B-road between Halesowen and Stourbridge, and it's gained notoriety as a crash 'blackspot.'

"A 'blackspot' is an area of road which sees a statistically high rate of accidents," says Kazimieras Urbonas, an expert from Ovoko. "These areas are often identified by engineers using statistical analysis in order to implement targeted safety measures."

Crashes here have been blamed on drivers swerving to dodge phantoms, most commonly youngsters wearing Victorian attire, who disappear as abruptly as they materialise.

Despite the road's absence of sharp curves or limited sight lines, accounts of smashes triggered by these supernatural disturbances continue to baffle both residents and transport officials.

4. A456, West Midlands

Just a couple of miles from Oldnall Road lies the A456, home to encounters with a cavalier in complete armoured dress.

One of the most notorious incidents was documented by a local Detective Constable, who insisted he witnessed the figure galloping alongside the carriageway before vanishing completely. Motorists here frequently describe feeling pursued or observed, though no physical menace has ever been confirmed.

5. A666, Bolton

Known as the Devil's Highway, the A666 runs between Bolton and Pendlebury with a lengthy record of spine-chilling incidents. Motorists have reported thick, unexplained mist sweeping across the carriageway, dark silhouettes weaving through woodland, and apparitions of a stooped figure or pale entity.

One tale that has endured for generations involves a woman materialising beside the road, only to disappear the moment vehicles decelerate.

"In the UK, the first number of an A road is given based on the area in which it starts, which is how the A666 ended up with its first six," says Urbonas. "The other numbers are assigned at random. Despite its reputation, the number was likely not given to this road intentionally."

6. A229, Kent

Recognised as merely one of the routes plagued by the 'Girl in White', the A229 has witnessed disturbing encounters across generations.

Observers describe a bride-to-be, clad in her wedding dress, stepping before cars and vanishing prior to any collision. One especially chilling testimony describes a motorist who draped her form with a blanket, only for her to vanish, leaving the covering behind.

The M6 isn't your conventional haunted rural path.

Stretching across numerous counties, it stands as Britain's longest motorway, and its extent and past accommodate a remarkable quantity of supernatural accounts.

Especially infamous is the section between junctions 16 and 19, where drivers have spotted shadowy forms apparently traversing lanes before vanishing completely.

Historical tragedies from the English Civil War and Roman times may explain the apparitions of soldiers sometimes reported here, giving drivers an unsettling feeling of the past brushing against the present.

Dartmoor's B3212 is notorious for the legend of the Hairy Hands, with reports dating back to the early 1900s. Drivers recount unseen hands seizing control of steering wheels and even bike handles, forcing motorcycles, bicycles, and cars to veer off-road despite their drivers' best efforts.

The stretch between Postbridge and Princetown is lined with piles of rocks, ruins, and ancient stone circles, creating a chilling backdrop that only heightens the unsettling tales.

"It has been suggested that the real explanation for these incidents is that the B3212 is a narrow, winding road that is often hard for tourists, who are unfamiliar with it, to navigate in the dark," says Urbonas.

Kazimieras Urbonas, Supplier Excellence Manager at Ovoko, commented: "Roads with haunted reputations often share a pattern: they are poorly lit, lined with trees or hedges, and have a history of accidents. When driving at night, it's easy for the mind to misinterpret shadows or fleeting movements as figures, especially when local stories are well-known.

"Maintaining your focus, reducing speed, and taking regular breaks are practical ways to navigate these stretches safely. Psychological factors, like fatigue and heightened awareness, can amplify the sensation of seeing something supernatural, so it's wise to remain alert and cautious rather than distracted."
