George Russell could be on the move at the end of the season, with Mercedes reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Max Verstappen. The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move to the Silver Arrows in recent weeks, and an agreement has been described as 'close'.
Verstappen has spoken openly about his struggles with the RB21 this season, and clauses in his contract would allow him to depart if Red Bull's struggles continue. As a result, Mercedes have looked to pounce.
According to Sky Sports Italy, Verstappen has said 'yes' to joining Toto Wolff at Mercedes and he has already indicated in talks that he is ready to leave Red Bull. Negotiations are therefore ongoing over a deal from 2026.
The Silver Arrows plan for Verstappen to replace Russell as part of their set-up, despite Wolff insisting that he has no issues with the Brit - who is out of contract at the end of this season. Talks are ongoing with Russell over a potential extension, but Mercedes feel the opportunity to sign Verstappen is 'cannot be ignored'.

As a result, some major changes on the grid are in the offing. Kimi Antonelli would work with Verstappen at Mercedes, which could therefore see Russell head in the opposite direction. Red Bull are 'waiting' to make an approach for the 27-year-old.
However, they aren't alone in their interest. Aston Martin are potentially considering a move for Russell as well at the end of the season, which would spark further changes elsewhere depending on whether they put their faith in Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll to partner him.
Russell has spoken about the possibility of leaving Mercedes previously to pave the way for Verstappen, explaining last month: "Like I said numerous times, why wouldn't teams be interested in Max? If every driver had no contracts for next year, Max would be No 1 for every single team. And that's understandable.
"But ultimately, there are two seats for every race team. I knew if I continue to perform as I'm doing, my position would not be under threat whatsoever. So, I feel in a good place.
"I'm not talking with anybody else and any teams who have shown interest. I have been quite open to say my intentions are to stay with Mercedes. That's always been clear. And I am loyal to Mercedes. They gave me this chance to get into Formula 1. We're in no rush to do contract negotiations. We want to win together, especially Kimi and I being team-mates now."
