Barclays has explained its policies about a certain restriction on the transactions customers can make. A customer contacted the group over social media as they had been told they couldn't deposit cash into their partner's bank account. They claimed the bank had told them they would have to pay the funds into their own account and then transfer it to their partner's account.
The person felt this was unfair saying that by denying the deposit, Barclays was "failing the people you are supposed to service". The unhappy customer also said: "I was told it was policy. If it is then it is a cynical one."
The bank responded to explain the rules. Barclays said: "You may not pay cash into another's bank account. This is a measure used to prevent fraud and money laundering.
"As you can imagine we are heavily regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority which means we follow certain rules." Barclays went on to set out how the person could move the funds to their partner's account.
The bank said: "You can pay money into your own account and transfer to someone electronically. You can also give them the cash and they can deposit it into their account."
Barclays also encouraged the person to get in touch with them about the issue, directing them to a page on their website with information about how to contact the bank. The customer responded to say it was "nonsensical" that they could deposit the cash and then transfer it to their partner, yet they couldn't deposit it into their account directly.
Customers can make a payment into another person's account using online banking or through the app. You can also do this in branch over the counter or at a self-service kiosk.
Barclays is currently offering up to £900 in total to people who switch to them. You can get a £200 payment when switching to a Barclays Bank Account or £400 when switching to a Premier account.
On top of this, you can also get up to £500 when switching over your ISA savings to the bank. You need to move over at least £100,000 to get the maximum £500 payment.
