Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR are all set to create fireworks at the box office with War 2, and their much-awaited clash brings back memories of another iconic North-South superstar collaboration from 1983—Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth in Andha Kanoon.
While comparisons may not be direct, the strategy behind War 2 strongly echoes the blockbuster planning of the past. Back in 1983, the hype around Amitabh Bachchan, dubbed the “Amitabh of the North”, and Rajinikanth, hailed as the “Amitabh of the South”, captivated audiences nationwide. The poster itself boldly announced this crossover, and cinema lovers in cities like Sitamarhi still remember how it created a frenzy.
Directed by T. Rama Rao and produced by Poornachandra Rao, Andha Kanoon became a pan-India hit. With a powerful lineup including Hema Malini, Reena Roy, and Prem Chopra, the film’s appeal cut across linguistic boundaries. Interestingly, Rajinikanth’s character was also named "Vijay", a name closely associated with Amitabh Bachchan's most iconic roles.
Fast forward to 2025, and War 2 is being built with the same pan-India ambition. Produced under the Yash Raj Films banner and directed by Ayan Mukerji, this film is the sixth installment in the studio’s spy universe. With a mega-budget of over ₹400 crore and a high-voltage star cast including Kiara Advani and Ashutosh Rana, expectations are sky-high.
Jr NTR’s massive fan base in the South and Hrithik Roshan’s dominance in the Hindi belt make this one of the most anticipated action thrillers. Their union could replicate the kind of countrywide appeal that films like Andha Kanoon and later Giraftaar (1985, starring Amitabh, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan) enjoyed.
The recent success of Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas, further proves that audiences today are excited by big-scale, pan-India collaborations. With War 2 releasing on 14th August, right before Independence Day, it seems poised to tap into both patriotic fervor and star power.
Will War 2 live up to this legacy and redefine the pan-India blockbuster model for the new generation? The countdown has begun.
