Speculation around the future of Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has been put to rest. After the duo announced their retirement from Test cricket during IPL 2025, rumors began circulating about their possible exit from ODIs as well. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially dismissed these reports.
Rajiv Shukla Clears the AirSpeaking at a talk show during the UP T20 League, BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla confirmed that both players will continue representing India in One-Day Internationals. When asked if they would receive a farewell similar to Sachin Tendulkar, Shukla responded:
"When did they retire? Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still playing ODIs. If they are still playing, why talk about retirement now? Why are you worrying unnecessarily?"
BCCI’s Policy on RetirementShukla reiterated that the BCCI never pressures players to retire. “Our policy is clear — the board never asks any player to retire. This decision has to be taken by them,” he said.
Fitness and Performance Still StrongThe BCCI Vice-President also praised both stalwarts, highlighting Kohli’s fitness and Rohit’s consistency in the ODI format. “Virat Kohli is still one of the fittest players. Rohit Sharma is playing excellent cricket. Fans should not worry about their retirement right now,” he added.
Upcoming Australia TourBoth Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature in the ODI series against Australia, scheduled from October 19 to 25, 2025. Despite widespread social media buzz suggesting that this could be their farewell series, the two senior pros have already begun training for the tour, quashing retirement rumors for now.
