As we age or put excessive pressure on our bodies, the natural lubrication in our knees, called synovial fluid, gradually reduces. When this lubrication decreases, the knee bones start rubbing against each other, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in walking. But this reduction in knee lubrication does not happen suddenly. Several warning signs appear beforehand.
Dr. Sankalp Mehta from the Orthopedics Department at PSRI Hospital, Delhi, explains these symptoms.
Symptoms Indicating Decreased Knee Lubrication-
Pain in the knees: Especially when climbing stairs or standing for long periods.
-
Morning stiffness: Feeling stiff upon waking up, often mistaken for simple fatigue.
-
Crackling or creaking sounds: This can indicate cartilage wear and dryness in the joint.
-
Swelling in the knees: Sometimes swelling persists even after rest.
These symptoms suggest that the natural lubrication of the knees is reducing.
If you notice these signs, consult a doctor immediately. Maintaining a balanced diet, doing regular light exercise, and physiotherapy can help care for your knees.
How to Take Care of Your Knees-
Mind your posture: Avoid sitting cross-legged for long periods or sleeping on hard surfaces, as they put extra pressure on your knees.
-
Exercise regularly: Daily light activities like walking, stretching, or yoga benefit your knees. Yoga poses such as quadriceps stretch and butterfly pose help strengthen the knees.
-
Eat right: Include calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Foods like milk, almonds, flax seeds, yogurt, and green leafy vegetables are helpful.
-
Seek professional help: If you experience pain, swelling, or cracking sounds, consult a physiotherapist or orthopedic specialist promptly. Timely treatment can prevent serious issues. Joint support supplements may also be recommended by your doctor.
Dr. Sankalp explains that once knee lubrication decreases, it cannot be fully restored. However, with proper care, its further loss can be prevented and controlled. Therefore, don’t ignore these early signs—take timely action to protect your knees.
