What is the whole matter?
The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2021 were declared on May 2. After this, violence broke out in many parts of the state. During this, serious crimes like murder, rape and attempted rape took place. After these incidents, there was chaos in the entire state. People had filed petitions in the Calcutta High Court against this violence. The National Human Rights Commission also showed strictness on these incidents. After this, a five-judge bench of the High Court ordered on August 19, 2021 that the investigation of cases like murder and crimes against women, especially rape, be handed over to the CBI.
How did the CBI investigate?
After the High Court's order, the CBI immediately started action. Special teams of selected officers were formed from across the country. These teams conducted a thorough investigation of the cases related to the violence and charge sheets were filed in most of the cases. The CBI also appointed special lawyers to expedite the hearing.
Rape of a 9-year-old girl
One such case was related to Manikchak police station of Malda district, in which a minor girl of nine years was raped. Investigation revealed that on the evening of 4 June 2021, Rafikul Islam alias Bhelu, a retired teacher from a government school in Malda, raped an innocent girl of nine years. This incident happened when the victim was playing in the mango garden of the accused. This incident was seen by the cousin of the victim. In the court, both the victim and the eyewitness clearly described the entire incident in their testimony. Their testimony was so strong that the court had no doubt in giving the verdict.
The court has given its verdict.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge of the POCSO court of Malda convicted Rafikul Islam alias Bhelu after the completion of the hearing on 2 July 2025. He was sentenced under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and Section 376 AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sections provide for very strict punishment for raping a girl under the age of 12. The sentence is expected to be announced on 4 July 2025. This is the first case of post-election violence in which the hearing has been completed and the culprit has also been sentenced. The sentence is likely to be pronounced on 4 July 2025. If the CBI shows speed in all its cases like this, then decisions can be taken quickly in many cases. Due to which all those people can get punishment, who thought that if they commit violence in Mamata's rule, then nothing will happen to them
