Just in case you are wondering as to when will the ‘Big Two’ of Indian cricket will make a comeback in Indian colours again, there is some good news. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom bid adieu to Test cricket in a hurry during the IPL last month, are expected to turn out in a three-match ODI series against Australia Down Under in October 2025.
In a white ball tour comprising of three ODIs and five T20 Internationals, the two giants will be figuring in only the 50-over contests – offering the Indian diaspora one of the last few chances to watch them in the international arena. The three ODIs are in Perth (19 October), Adelaide (23 October) and Sydney (25 October) with Cricket Australia confirming that the enduring appeal of the duo has ensured that tickets for the last ODI is already exhausted fourth months before the match.
Joel Morrison, Cricket Australia’s executive general manager of events & operations, said in a release: “We are thrilled to see continued strong engagement amongst the Indian diaspora, driven in no small part by the anticipation of seeing legends like Rohit and Kohli in action. The Sydney ODI has all the ingredients of a blockbuster.”
Rohit Sharma: 2027 ODI World Cup looks a bridge too far for the HitmanFan clubs like Bharat Army and Fans India have already snapped up thousands of tickets, ensuring that the Australian venues turn into virtual home grounds for Men in Blue. Community groups like Brissy Baniyas and the Indian Community of Gold Coast have also contributed to the ticketing frenzy, ensuring colourful crowds and a festive feel across all venues.
Tickets for the opening T20I in Canberra on 29 October have been completely exhausted, while following are the fixtures of other four games: Melbourne (31 October), Hobart (2 November), Gold Coast (6 November) and Brisbane (8 October). India, the current T20 World Cup champions, will be led by Suryakumar Yadav unless the selectors have a heart of a team built around the likes of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma and Arshdeep Singh.
The challenge for both Rohit and Virat, who still hope for a last hurrah in the 2027 ICC World Cup, is the lack of game time – now that they don’t play in either T20Is or Tests. No sooner the IPL ended where Virat ended a 18-year title drought with Royal Challengers Bangalore, has left for England where he and Anushka had reportedly hosted the visiting Indian team. Rohit, on the other hand, acted as a brand ambassador for the recent Mumbai T20 franchise league and is now on vacation in Europe.
There could again be speculation on whether the veterans make themselves available for domestic cricket in 2025-26 season – but right now, they are still in the middle of a well-earned downtime.
