Martin Brundle gets superstar singer mixed up with brother in hilarious Singapore GP gaffe

Martin Brundle could not help but laugh at himself after he mistook a man on the Singapore Grand Prix grid for superstar musician Lewis Capaldi. He was immediately set right by the man he had approached, who turned out to be the Scottish singer's brothers – as the star himself appeared behind him.

It happened right at the end of Brundle's pre-race segment live on Sky Sports, just after he had finished speaking to Superman actor David Corensweat. He then turned to another man and said: "Lewis, wonderful to see you," clearly under the impression that he was speaking to Lewis Capaldi.

But he was quickly set straight when the man, smiling, replied: "I'm his brother!" With perfect timing, the actual singer appeared behind the man laughing at Brundle who, chuckling at his error, tried to excuse it by saying: "He's got a cap on."

The mistake was taken in good humour by the brothers as Lewis said: "Nice to meet you, I'm a big fan." He was then asked by Brundle who he was cheering on in the race that was about to begin, to which the musician replied while pointing to his brother: "Well, he's here supporting McLaren."

Brundle then put the microphone under the nose of the lesser-known Capaldi who said: "I'm just a guy who's here, that's all." And Brundle then rounded off the interview by saying: "Well, I'm sorry that I mistaked you, but it's lovely to see you on the grid."

Before the cameras then cut away from Brundle and to the start of the Singaporean national anthem, Capaldi was seen roaring with laughter over what had just happened. And his amusement was shared by fans on social media who were swift to react in droves to another iconic moment from a Brundle grid walk.

Many of those online commenters noticed how Brundle had also snubbed Capaldi's offer of a handshake at the end of the interview. "Lewis Capaldi took it well, a Martin Brundle grid walk at his best," wrote one fan, while another said: "Not Martin Brundle calling Lewis Capaldi's brother Lewis and then missing Lewis Capaldi's handshake as well."

Fans also spoke of how much they enjoyed the segment, after Brundle had skipped the last race in Azerbaijan. "That Lewis Capaldi interview was the best TV I've seen in a while," one said, while another added: "That Lewis Capaldi gridwalk interview might have been the best of all time."

Capaldi was in Singapore only days after he had appeared on the Graham Norton show alongside music megaster Taylor Swift, who is promoting her new album The Life of a Showgirl.

"Waves were also made on social media by the Scottish singer when, while also sat alongside actors Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Domnhall Gleeson, he dropped a C-bomb.
