Burnley are closing in on a deal to sign Manchester Citydefender Kyle Walker. England international Walker, 35, had a medical with the newly-promoted Clarets on Friday ahead of a move which could be worth up to £5million.

Walker is entering the final year of his contract at City and, although he started last season as the club captain, he finished it on loan withAC Milan. He had been expected to join the Rossoneri on a permanent deal, but amid major upheaval at San Siro, they Serie A side declined to take up an option to make his move permanent.

Walker, capped 96 times by England, was subsequently not part of City’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup and another move had been anticipated.

Instead, he is now set for Turf Moor, where he will reunite with Burnley boss Scott Parker. Parker was Walker's team-mate at Tottenham between 2011 and 2013. The move may be completed over the weekend.

His arrival would give Burnley some much-needed experience, which was sorely lacking when they were last in the Premier League as then-manager Vincent Kompany focused on signing young players with high potential. It didn't work and they were immediately relegated back to the Championship - although Kompany was duly poached by Bayern Munich.

Parker picked up the pieces and led the Clarets to second place and promotion from the second tier last term, boasting a remarkably mean and impressive defence, conceding just 16 times in 46 league matches.

In eight years with City, Walker has won 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League as part of their treble success in the 2022/23 campaign.

He is in line to become Burnley’s fifth new signing of the summer following Max Weiss, Quilindschy Hartman, Axel Tuanzebe and Loum Tchouana. Loan deals for Bashir Humphreys, Marcus Edwards, Zian Flemming and Jaidon Anthony have also been made permanent.
