Jamie Carragher has rubbished Peter Schmeichel's brave prediction that Chelsea are capable of winning the Premier League title with struggling goalkeeper Robert Sanchez between the posts. The Blues have endured a faltering start to the campaign, securing victory in only two of their initial six league fixtures.
Keeper Sanchez has been blighted with inconsistent form, with a string of glaring mistakes, while his dismissal against Manchester United at Old Trafford proved equally damaging.
Former Liverpool legend Carragher has consistently slated the Spaniard and previously insisted that he ought to have been replaced during the summer transfer window. Chelsea opted to stick with him, albeit his form has still suffered.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher asked Schmeichel whether Sanchez could still become a league-winning goalkeeper and received a surprising answer.
Carragher said: "Peter, you famously signed for Manchester United and were a big difference to them going on to win the Premier League. Do you think Chelsea can win the league with Robert Sanchez in goal?".

Following a momentary hesitation, the ex-Premier League champion said: "Erm yes, and better defenders." Nevertheless, Carragher remained thoroughly unconvinced as he responded: "No chance Peter, no chance!"
Once presenter Kate Abdo had bid farewell to Schmeichel, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards then interjected as he told Carragher: "You put him on the spot there, didn't you? He didn't say it with conviction did he!"
Sanchez is expected to feature between the sticks for Chelsea this weekend having already completed his suspension for his dismissal at Old Trafford.
He was replaced by Filip Jorgensen in last month's Carabao Cup encounter with Lincoln City. Sanchez has since made a full comeback against his former team Brighton - a match which Chelsea lost 3-1 - while he also managed to keep a clean sheet against Benfica in the Champions League.

The Spanish shot-stopper was snapped up from Brighton in a £25m deal back in 2023. Since then, he's racked up 69 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions and has kept the opposition at bay with 22 clean sheets.
However, he hasn't quite managed to secure his spot as the first choice. During his debut season, he was in competition with current Bournemouth star Djordje Petrovic for the position and while he was given more chances last term, Sanchez found himself benched for Jorgensen on several occasions.
Chelsea opted to say goodbye to a few goalkeepers this summer. Petrovic transferred to Premier League rivals Bournemouth, while Kepa Arrizabalaga was sold off to Arsenal.
Promising young talent Mike Penders was loaned out to sister side Strasbourg. Chelsea are gearing up for their next match this weekend as they face Liverpool, with the Reds suffering with their own goalkeeper issues.
Brazilian keeper Alissonwas injured in their Champions League loss to Galatasaray and it seems likely that Giorgi Mamardashvili will step in should he not recover in time.
