Oil Vessel MT Yi Cheng 6 Catches Fire With 14 Crew Members Of Indian-Origin Onboard; Indian Navy Deploys INS Tabar For Rescue Operations

Muscat: A massive fire broke out in oil vessel MT Yi Cheng 6 in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, June 29. There are 14 crew members of Indian origin onboard the vessel. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, deployed in the Gulf of Oman, responded to a distress call from the oil vessel.

The vessel was on its journey from India's Kandla port to Oman's Shinas when it experienced a major fire in the engine room and total power failure onboard.

As per the Indian Navy, 13 Indian naval personnel and 05 crew members of the oil vessel are currently involved in the firefighting operation.

"#INSTabar, mission deployed in the Gulf of Oman, responded to a distress call from Pulau flagged MT Yi Cheng 6, on #29Jun 25. The vessel with 14 crew members of Indian origin, transiting from Kandla, India to Shinas, Oman, experienced a major fire in the engine room and total power failure onboard," the Indian Navy said in An X post.

"The fire fighting team and equipment from #INSTabar were transferred onboard by the ship's boat and helicopter. 13 Indian naval personnel and 05 crew members of the stricken tanker are currently involved in firefighting operations, with the intensity of fire onboard reduced drastically," it added.

Singapore-Flagged Cargo Ship MV Wan Hai 503 Caught Fire Off Kerala Coast:

Notably, it is not the first time the Indian Navy has responded to a distress call and been involved in firefighting operations aboard a merchant ship. Earlier this month, when MV Wan Hai 503, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship caught fire, the Indian Navy carried out an operation to douse the blaze.

The 270-metre-long vessel, with a draught of 12.5 metres, had left Colombo on June 7 and was en route to Mumbai, expected to arrive on June 10. On June 9, an explosion was reported on board the Singapore-flagged container ship off the coast of Kerala.
