She is considered the sixth goddess of the Mahavidyas, and the temple in Rajrappa is dedicated to her.

What is the Mother Goddess's form like?

The form of the Mother Goddess enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple evokes both awe and reverence in devotees. The Goddess holds a sword in her right hand and her own severed head in her left. Three streams of blood flow from her body: two are dedicated to her companions, Dakini and Shakini (Jaya and Vijaya), and the third is received by the Goddess herself.

The Mother Goddess stands on a lotus flower, and images of Kamadeva and Rati are engraved beneath her feet. This form, with a garland of skulls, a snake garland, and open hair, is considered a symbol of strength, renunciation, and extraordinary sacrifice.

Why did the Goddess cut off her head?

An interesting legend is prevalent regarding the emergence of Mother Chinnamasta. It is said that once, while Mother Goddess was bathing in the river with her companions, Jaya and Vijaya, they suddenly became very hungry and begged for food.

The Mother Goddess asked them to wait a little longer, but seeing their unbearable hunger, the Goddess immediately cut off her head with her sword. Blood flowed from her neck in three streams. Two streams satisfied her companions, and the third was consumed by the Mother Goddess herself. At that very moment, Mother Chinnamasta appeared. This story reflects the Goddess's immense sacrifice and compassion. She shows that she will go to any lengths to fulfill the needs of her devotees.
