BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Indian-American US lawmaker Zohran Kwame Mamdani who defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor.
"His mother is Mira Nair, one of our best filmmakers, Padmashri , a beloved and celebrated daughter born and raised in great Bharat based in Newyork, she married Mehmood Mamdani ( Gujarati origin) a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran, he sounds more Pakistani than Indian ….. whatever happened to his Hindu identity or bloodline and now he is ready to wipe out Hinduism, wow!!" said Ranaut in a post on X.
"It’s the same story every where. On a different note met Mira ji on couple of occasions congratulations to the parents," said the BJP MP.
Zohran clinches key win
In a stunning victory, Indian-American lawmaker Zohran Kwame Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor. and will be contesting against incumbent Eric Adams in The New York City mayoral election scheduled for November 4.
Mamdani, son of renowned Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan author of Indian ancestry, was declared victorious in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night. “In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it's done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City,” Mamdani said in a post on X.
Mamdani was born in Kampla, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, and raised in New York City. He moved to New York with his parents when he was seven. His mother Mira Nair has won applause for films like 'Monsoon Wedding' and 'Salaam Bombay!'.
Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens and a democratic socialist running for Mayor, is married to Brooklyn- based Syrian-born artist Rama Duwaji.
US Senator Bernie Sanders congratulated Mamdani and his thousands of grassroots supporters for their "extraordinary campaign". "You took on the political, economic and media Establishment - and you beat them. Now it's on to victory in the general election.”
“My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City. We have won from Harlem to Bay Ridge,” a report in the New York Times quoted Mamdani as saying at a victory party in Queens.
As Cuomo conceded the race, he said: "Tonight was not our night. Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”
His website says he fought for the working class in and outside the legislature and his efforts include hunger striking alongside taxi drivers to achieve more than $450 million in transformative debt relief, winning over $100 million in the state budget for increased subway service and a successful fare-free bus pilot, and organising New Yorkers to defeat a proposed dirty power plant.
